Guildford High School for Girls- owns a couple of letters written by Carroll and they kindly gave me permission to quote one of them in the book. Carroll had a great respect for the intelligence of women and girls and was an early feminist, in his quaint and idiosyncratic way. I suppose modern feminists would be scornful of his firm belief, though, that too much studying led to curvature of the spine in girls and ruined their beauty.
